In the state of Kerala, India, where verdant landscapes and rich cultural heritage converge, a transformative initiative is underway, spearheaded by the Captains Social Foundation. The project, in collaboration with Good Deeds Day, aims to renovate and rejuvenate schools, creating enhanced learning environments for students across the region. Good Deeds Day, an international day of volunteering, was initiated by businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison in 2007. On this special day, millions of people from 118 countries across the globe participate in doing good.
Transforming learning spaces
The Captains Social Foundation, known for its unwavering commitment to social welfare and community development, has set its sights on addressing the critical need for improved educational facilities in Kerala. Recognizing that a conducive learning environment is paramount to fostering academic excellence and holistic growth, the foundation has embarked on a comprehensive school renovation project.
“My involvement with Good Deeds Day started in 2019 when I was in my final year of college. While searching online for organizations that promote volunteering, I came across Good Deeds Day and was impressed by their wide range of activities worldwide. Starting with around 5 volunteers, we have now grown to a network of around 10,000 volunteers, with GDD activities playing a major role in expanding our network and mobilizing volunteers,” Afsal Mohammed B, Founder and CEO of the Captains Social Foundation told Goodnet.
The scope of this ambitious undertaking encompasses a wide array of initiatives, including structural upgrades, modernization of classrooms, installation of advanced technology tools, and enhancement of recreational areas. Dilapidated buildings are being refurbished, ensuring safety and comfort for students and faculty alike. The Captains Social Foundation recognizes the evolving nature of education, emphasizing collaborative learning, creativity, and critical thinking. As such, renovated schools feature flexible classrooms, interactive digital learning resources, and dedicated areas for extracurricular activities, empowering students to explore their potential and thrive in a dynamic educational ecosystem.
“These programs will not only improve the physical infrastructure of schools but also create a more conducive learning environment for students. These initiatives will focus on addressing specific social issues and making a positive impact at the grassroots level. Our efforts for GDD 2024 are focused on expanding our volunteer base, diversifying our activities, and making a meaningful difference in communities around the world,” Mohammed explained.
Breathing new life into education
The school renovation project is making a huge impact by revitalizing campuses throughout the Kerala region. Students are greeted with vibrant, inspiring spaces that ignite their curiosity and passion for learning. Teachers find themselves equipped with modern tools and resources to facilitate immersive and engaging lessons. Parents and communities witness firsthand the transformational power of education in shaping brighter futures for generations to come.
Mohammed talked about the dedication of the project’s volunteers. “Our volunteers who are involved in Good Deeds Day activities feel extremely positive about their work. They find great satisfaction in contributing to their communities and making a difference in the lives of others. Many volunteers have expressed that their involvement with GDD has been a transformative experience, allowing them to develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, and gain a deeper understanding of social issues. They also have a feeling of being a part of something bigger than themselves through their work with GDD. Seeing themselves featured and being a part of worldwide activities has inspired them to spread the word to their friends and family and join the movement of promoting volunteerism.
“Liba, a passionate volunteer of our organization who was inspired by the spirit of Good Deeds Day activities, decided to bring a positive change to her community. She saw an opportunity to make a difference through a School Renovation Program in collaboration with Elamkulam Grama Panchayath in Malappuram. This project was not just about renovating a building; it was about transforming a community. It was the first of its kind initiative in the Panchayat, marking a significant milestone for everyone during the program. Liba’s dedication and tireless efforts were the driving force behind this transformation. Her commitment to the community and passion for volunteering have truly made a difference,” Mohammed explained.
As the Captains Social Foundation continues its mission to bolster education infrastructure in Kerala, the ripple effects of this endeavor are felt far and wide. It serves as a testament to the profound impact of strategic philanthropy and collaborative efforts in driving positive change and unlocking the full potential of individuals and communities.
